When I was a young woman, I went to the town of Lidice in the Czech Republic and the concentration camp of Terezin. I remember being shocked into both silence and stillness; reeling from the weight of these places and the stories told by the abandoned buildings. As I sat against a wall near the crematorium, I curled inward with my thoughts and my energy. It is one thing to know a story but a far more impactful moment to place your feet on the ground and know that you stand in the shadow of history. I touched the walls; I felt the cool brick.
A field trip disturbed my introspection with their raucous laughter. They didn’t feel what I was feeling and I wanted to walk up to them and make them feel it. I wanted to shout in their faces at the atrocity committed here even though their hands were innocent of any crime. Why couldn’t they see what I saw? Why weren’t they moved?
It turned out that I needed to do nothing. The place did it for me. One by one, these teens fell as silent as mourners at a funeral. Their steps slowed and their eyes widened. Silence returned again to Terazin. Place can be a powerful inspiration for change.
The story I heard in Lidice was that Hitler, enraged by the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich, demanded that every building, every field, every scrap of metal be destroyed in reprisal for the suspected harboring of resistance members and allied soldiers. Every building was burned and all the remains eradicated with explosives. All the men over 15 and any wife who refused to leave her husband’s side was executed. They were buried in mass graves dug by the prisoners of Terezin. The remaining women were take to concentration camps and the children were tested to see if they were “German enough.” Only nine passed and were adopted into German families; their culture and history stripped from them. Hitler wanted to erase the town itself from memory but his actions would have the opposite effect. Towns all over the world took up the name of Lidice and funds were raised so that rebuilding might occur nearby after the war for the women and children who survived.
I stood before 82 child-sized bronze statues on the unadorned field to commemorate the children murdered at the Chelmno camp. In the end 340 souls died from the cruel desire to erase a place from memory. Even the air felt still as the heat bore down on me. Emptiness filled my senses. I fought back against the emptiness with melancholy poetry only a 21 year old could write.
Places hold memory. Memory, for good or bad, has the power to teach and move us. Before we destroy or abandon them, please consider the lessons possible and the memory we choose to leave behind..
Here is a glimpse at the angsty 21 year old who took off to Europe and never wanted to come home. 15 years. Wow. Be kind to her 🙂 She thought she understood it all.
