We are going to make it. If you are self-quarantining like so many of us, this may be your time. Pull out that old sketch book. Dust off the keyboard. Open that book. During a period of time where so much of what we are experience is stressful and/or negative, do SOMETHING positive. Hold one small light against the darkness.

We are continuing as per usual around here for the most part. While we miss our community days and martial arts’ classes, my homeschool kiddos carry forward with their lessons and home-centered activities. We are planning digital class attendance and digital play dates in the coming week but, thus far, they are largely unaffected by the outside. I, however, am getting a little restless and have dug into my hobby repertoire.

The boy-child asked for a blanket. Guys, he NEVER wants anything I crochet. His sister is always coming to me with ideas for headbands, clothes, and baby accessories but not him. So, I nonchalantly said, “Sure, baby.” Inside, however, I said, “Yes!Yes! Yes!” like a big ol’ nerd.

Be cool, Mom. Be cool.

I even liked the color he picked off of my wall of yarn- a pretty cyan blue that, regrettably, was later pared with a garish yellow. Breathe through the bold swirl. Breathe. Take the win. He wants a circle blanket. He wants to record me making it. WHAT?!

Again and again I have been asked to share crochet projects but never really follow through. I am self-taught from library videos and through my scouring of YouTube tutorials. I don’t want to teach anyone the wrong thing.

But we’re house-bound and he wants to make videos. OKAY…..? Check out my instagram page at BreatheDeep212.

WHAT TO DO

MATERIALS:

Caron Simply Soft Yarn in cyan and yellow

Size 10 Crochet Hook

Step 1:

Make a Magic Circle. Cast on 12 double crochets with two skeins of yarn. There is a child-taken video of me doing this at BreatheDeep212 on instagram. Both my yarn colors are Caron simply soft with a weight of 4. Today I used a hook size 10 but, with thicker yarn I use a hook size of 15.75 which makes it go SO much faster. If your project starts to curl, consider loosening your tension or grabbing a bigger hook.

I will keep updating this post and my instagram feed as the project continues. Good luck!

Step 2:

Chain one. Start in the SAME stitch always. 2 double crochets in each of the twelve stitches=24 stitches. Slip stitch and carry on.

Step 3:

Chain one. 2 double crochets in the first stitch, 1 double crochet in the next. Repeat. 36 stitches. Third row has a pattern of three. Get it?

Step 4:

Chain one. 2 double crochets in the first stitch, single crochet in the next 2 stitches. Repeat. 48 stitches . 12x table! Pattern of four for the fourth row. Keep going!

Step 5:

Chain one. 2 double crochets in the first stitch. This first stitch is the only pain in the pattern I swear. You have to wiggle it away from the slip stitch that completes the previous row. After you slip stitch the previous row, chain one and in the same stitch place your 2 double crochets. Next, single crochet in the next 4 stitches. Row 5, pattern of 5. Try with a smaller hook and make a doilie. 12×5=60 stitches. Slip stitch and proceed. Go until you have a place at! A baby blanket! A couch blanket!
